The bug that led to the Equifax security breach affecting 143 million customers was discovered and made patchable on March 6th – 2 months before the breach.

The vulnerability, known as Apache Struts CVE-2017-5638, was well publicized as it was trivial for users to exploit and allowed them to gain full control of web servers.

This follows the news that the Equifax Chief Security Officer was a music major and another breach occurred in Argentina because the admin username and password was set to “admin”.

The amount of money executives saved by gutting their IT department has yet to be disclosed.
